Gigantopithecus by SameerPrehistorica Gigantopithecus by SameerPrehistorica
Gigantopithecus was a giant ancient relative of the orangutan. It most likely walked on all fours as modern gorillas and chimpanzees. Gigantopithecus would have stood about 9 to 10 feet tall on its hind legs and weighed about 200 to 540 kg (440 to 1,190 lbs),making the species three times as heavy as modern gorillas.Large males may have had an arm span of 3.6 m (12 ft). The species was highly sexually dimorphic, with adult females roughly half the weight of males. Because of wide inter species differences in the relationship between tooth and body size, some argue that it is more likely that Gigantopithecus was much smaller, at roughly 1.8–1.9 m (5.9–6.2 ft). Gigantopithecus teeth have a large number of cavities, similar to those found in giant pandas that has a diet which includes a large amount of bamboo. However it's teeth also suggests that it fed on seeds and fruits as well.
Being so large, Gigantopithecus possibly had few or no enemies when fully grown. However, younger, weak, or injured individuals may have been vulnerable to predation by tigers, pythons, crocodiles, hyenas, bears, and Homo erectus.Gigantopithecus is the largest ape that has ever existed.

Fossils have been found in China, India and Vietnam.

(Certainly there ain't no ching chong sized ape.)

Well, comparable to a human or apes of today yes, it was, but a tiger half or more than half of its size was able to kill it, just like a leopard half or more than half of a gorilla's size is able to kill a gorilla.

Yes, you're right... Comparing to humans they are much stronger, but they are not invencible

Could you make a size comparison of a 25 ft tall ape based on these silhouettes, and send it to me in a message? (I'm asking this because I've never seen an accurate size comparison of King Kong).

Why not? It seems to be more accurate than the 3 m figure.

I'm not interested in human-like reconstruction for Gigantopithecus.

I have read it would actually grow closer to 2 m if it is reconstructed with gorilla proportions, 3 m tall would require human head/body ratio which is implausible.
Not a bad thing about your art, it is awesome as always and I specially like the look of this Giganto, but I thought you should consider this info.

It is said that this species was highly sexually dimorphic, with adult females roughly half the weight of males. Because of wide inter species differences in the relationship between tooth and body size, some argue that it is more likely that Gigantopithecus was much smaller, closer to 2m as you said. However, mostly it is said that this ape stood 3m on it's hind legs,so i had to do it that way.

That fictional character was quite oversized in the new Jungle book movie.King Louie was not in Rudyard Kipling's original works.
