End military abuse of animals used as training for trauma courses

Thousands of live goats and pigs animals are cut apart, shot, and blown up in U.S. military training drills every year even though humane methods like human-patient simulators that provide more effective and realistic training are available and military regulations require that alternatives to animals be used whenever they exist.

Only five NATO nations—Canada, Denmark, Norway, the U.S., and the U.K.—continue to use animals in these barbaric exercises. The Canadian military cuts apart and poisons live pigs with toxic chemicals, the military of Norway shoots live pigs with high-velocity bullets and inflicts numerous life-threatening injuries and bone fractures, and the military of Denmark—with participation from the U.K. Ministry of Defence—subjects live pigs to horrific bullet and blast wounds. The U.S. military stabs, shoots, dismembers, burns, and kills thousands of animals each year as well.

Lifelike human simulators that "breathe" and "bleed" and can be used in realistic battlefield scenarios have been shown by military and civilian studies to prepare doctors and medics to treat injured humans more effectively than mutilating and killing animals.

These barbaric animal laboratories also go against the spirit of Canadian, British, Norwegian, and Danish national laws and regulations as well as likely violating European Union law, which requires the use of non-animal training methods whenever possible.

Two of the preferred animals for training are pigs and goats. Pigs are among the top ten smartest types of animals in the world, cleverer than even dogs or cats. Goats are naturally curious creatures who like to socialize in herds, and are quick to learn. Thousands of these animals are being brutally mistreated and killed.

What is even more disturbing about this situation is that surgical and war-veteran doctors have stated animal anatomy cannot properly duplicate a human system. This means the military are injuring animals as a form of practice when in reality the animal does not even accurately represent the challenges the personnel will face when dealing with human wounds.

My husband actually used a goat for his combat medical training. He says it was the best training he had. He isn't a bad person, and does attest to them being medicated the whole time and then being put down humanly afterwards. He doesn't like that it had to be a living creature who had no control. We both believe that death row criminals should replace the critters who had nothing to do with our human agenda. Cleans up prisons, stops the waste of animals, and gives the training the medics need to save lives.
