Jurassic World Dinosaurs slammed by Experts

Steven Spielberg's original Jurassic Park films pleased paleontologists for depicting dinosaurs accurately and in line with the science of the time.

But angry dinosaur experts have branded the new Jurassic World - produced by the legendary director - a 'dumb monster movie' for failing to include new discoveries about the creatures.

Dinosaurs have always been depicted as lizards with leathery skins, including the original Jurassic Park in 1993 and its sequels in 1997 and 2007 but many actually had feathers. Fossils found in north America, China and Germany in recent years have proved that the fierce creatures - including the Tyrannosaurus rex and velociraptors - were in fact fluffy and possibly even brightly-coloured.

Darren Naish, author of The Great Dinosaur Discoveries, told CNN: "Our hopes came crashing down with the tweeting of two words from Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow – 'no feathers'.

He said the pterosaurs should have been portrayed as attractive "furry beasts" rather than "shiny-skinned horrors with grotesque, gnarly faces". And the seagoing mosasaur should have been more cumbersome than the way it is depicted. They said pterosaurs would not have been able to lift people off the ground as shown, and the gallimimus was the wrong size and should not have had teeth.

Thomas R. Holtz, Jr, a paleontologist at the University of Maryland, told CBS News. "Sadly, the dinosaurs in Jurassic World have not been updated with any new information from the 1990s or 2000s or 2010s, and indeed in a few cases are less accurate than in the original movie."

Among the most cited inaccuracies are how T-Rex can't see you if you stay perfectly still, and how Velociraptors can open doors.

But the scientist behind the film, Jack Horner, argues that many of these criticisms are based on opinion rather than fact.  'I would disagree with that, Raptors can open doors, they certainly have the hands and arms,' he told DailyMail.com.

Molecular biologist Horner says who have to remember that these dinosaurs were created from partial DNA and so wouldn't look the same as the originals anyway.
Besides, he says, you have to remember this is a work of fiction.'It's a movie, a fictional movie,' he said. 'I laugh at the scientists who criticize it. It’s funny. When Jurassic Park first came out they did the same thing.'

Director Colin Trevorrow has hit back at criticism saying the film is "not a documentary". He says the movie is science-fiction and so 'inaccurate'.
